After 2 years my original Tesla 12v lead-acid battery died. This new lithium battery is a really clever replacement/upgrade option that should last more than twice as long and perform much better. This battery is more expensive than replacing 1 lead-acid battery at Tesla, but not 2 lead-acid batteries so for me it's a no-brainer upgrade.
Always good to ask the question though. From a 100% environmental standpoint, it would be better to upgrade the battery when it's possible to do so than to buy a whole new automobile just for a different battery.
